WHO ARE WE?
Alice Pye is a pretty ordinary person with an extraordinary love of jazz music and how we dance to it. She's been hooked on this drug ever since she took her first dinky swing class in 2007. Ever since then she's been trying to get people to dance and become lost in the music at least once in their lives. By day, Alice works with children with developmental disabilities but by night, she runs a monthly dance in Long Beach, California which she is convinced is the weirdest, funky-est, craziest, most incredible city on the planet that more people should know about. Her driving passion comes from trying to establish relationships between dancers and musicians so they can draw inspiration from each other and keep our community alive and growing.
Claire Guillen has always been in love with Swing Dancing! She claims she is an “old soul”, who feels at home with everything nostalgic that comes along with the genre: the music, the vintage clothing, the hairstyles, and of course, the dances of the 30s and 40s era. She was introduced to swing dancing in college in the Midwest and after returning to the Long Beach area in the late 90’s she could often be found dancing three days a week at places like Memories (OC), the Derby, and Disneyland. After taking a short break from dancing to raise her two daughters, she is back with a renewed passion to make Long Beach one of the destination locations for swing dancers all over Southern California. Using her extensive organizing skills and expert experience planning events, she is determined to make 4th Saturday Swing the most exciting monthly swing dancing communities anywhere.
To simply say that Mark has a love of music is a bit of an understatement! Mark has basically been passionate about music his whole life. Since the time he was 8, he has been learning about music, performing as a musician, teaching music, dancing to music, and generally surrounding himself with other people who also love music. He also has an unhealthy passion for live music, and tries to see just about any show he can obtain tickets to attend. Mark was first introduced to swing dancing 15 years ago when he fell for a tall blonde who was dancing three times a week. She told him “if you want to date me, then you have to learn how to swing”. And so, the adventure began. By the way, that ‘tall blonde’ is now his wife, and we still swing dance together! Mark is a graduate of the UCLA School of Film and Television with an emphasis in music, performs around town in his band Redwood Down, and supports the local music scene by being an Area Representative for the Long Beach Music Council. He is excited about being a part of the Long Beach Swing Dance Community, and helping to make Long Beach a destination for Swing Dancers all across Southern California.
